Different levels. One coherent design.

Multilevel & split-level decks

A multilevel deck can turn a change in grade into distinct outdoor spaces. The strongest layouts give every level a purpose and keep the route between them clear.

01

Assign a purpose to each level

Place dining near the kitchen, leave a comfortable route through seating, and connect the lowest level to the yard. Start with furniture dimensions and door movement before drawing complex edges.

02

Count transitions as part of the scope

Extra stairs, guards, foundations and drainage details can add work that is easy to miss in a simple area calculation. Ask the estimate to show these components separately.

03

Compare a simpler alternative

A generous single-level deck may serve you better than several cramped platforms. Ask the designer to compare how the layouts work, including access for children, older guests and moving furniture.

Questions worth asking

Does a multilevel deck need different materials at each level?

No. Consistent boards and fascia can tie the design together; contrasting borders are optional.

Can I reuse one level and replace another?

Possibly, after the retained structure and the connections between levels are assessed.
