Plan the upper and lower spaces together
Decide whether the area below will stay open or become a sheltered sitting area. That choice affects drainage, access and finishing details. Leave practical access for inspection and maintenance.
Make stairs work for daily life
Locate stairs around how people move to the garden and how furniture or maintenance equipment will travel. Request a drawing with landings, handrails and guard details instead of choosing stair locations from a photograph alone.
Prioritize the complete structural design
Raised structures need suitable foundations, bracing, connections and protection of the building envelope. A surface replacement does not automatically establish the condition of the structure supporting it.
Questions worth asking
Can I remove the stairs for more space?
The design must account for required access and egress. Have that reviewed before changing the existing layout.
Can the space below stay dry?
Potentially, with a suitable drainage or waterproofing assembly. Ordinary deck boards alone do not provide that.
